Client Resources
Overview
Identifying, evaluating, and delivering resources is a distinct professional skill, not an afterthought at the end of a session. A family leaves the appointment with a diagnosis they did not have that morning, and what happens next depends heavily on whether they can pay for testing, find other families living with the condition, and connect to the services their child is entitled to. Resource work is where genetic counseling stops being a conversation and starts changing what a family can actually do.
Key Concepts
- Appropriateness matters as much as accuracy. A technically correct resource written at a twelfth-grade reading level, in a language the family does not read, describing a healthcare system they cannot access, has failed. Match the resource to the person.
- Timing is part of the intervention. A support group offered at the moment of diagnosis may overwhelm; the same referral three weeks later may be exactly right. A financial assistance program is only useful before the bill arrives.
- Cost is a clinical variable. An unaffordable test does not get done, and an undone test yields no result. Treating financial barriers as someone else's problem quietly changes the medical outcome.
- Rare means isolated. For most conditions in this library, the family will never meet another affected family without help. Connecting them is often the single most valued thing a counselor does.
